Looking Back: Ranking the Class of 2009

Yesterday I looked back at the rankings I had for Tim Brewster’s class of 2008 and today I revist the Class of 2009
The Class of 2009
1.      Hayo Carpenter – 5* JUCO WR this ultra-productive WR could be a fantastic complement to Eric Decker.  I am really excited for Hayo to come aboard
2.      Ra’shede Hageman – 3* UA All-American TE chose the Gophers over offers from TOSU, Fla and Oklahoma
3.      Michael Carter – 4* Army All-American CB had offers from Florida, Texas, FSU, Georgia and Auburn
4.      Hasan Lipscomb – 4* RB had offers from LSU, Texas A&M and Nebraska
5.      Josh Campion – 3* OT verballed shortly after receiving his written offer on September 1 of his junior year.  Good bloodlines as his brother played in the NFL
6.      Joey Searcy – 3* DT this athletic DT could create pressure from the interior and was rated the #31 DT by Rivals
7.      Kerry Lewis – 3* S ESPN really likes him as a S and had offers from Oregon, Texas A&M, Okie Lite and Iowa
8.      Bryant Allen – 3* ATH has some video game like video and offers from Wisconsin, Iowa and Mizzou
9.      Matt Garin – 3* DEhad offers from UCLA, WV, Stanford, Oregon St and ASU
10.   Kendall Gregory-McGee 3* ATH Rivals rated him the #31 ATH which was very close to 4* territory
11.   Moses Alipate – 3* QB was rated in the Top 60 for the Rivals watch list early in the process and reportedly had 20 offers (rated this low due to M  Gray and Weber ahead of him)
12.   Brent Singleton – 3* S the former SCAR commit has the speed that Brew wants in a OLB
13.   Kenneth Watkins – 3* S has good measurables and we stole him away from Indiana
14.   Jeff Wills – 3* JUCO OT a mountain of a kid plus he has JUCO experience
15.   Nick Rengel – 2* ATH had 6 other offers from schools like UCF, NIU and C Mich)
16.   Brooks Michel – 3* OT the big Indy product has offers from NC State and Kentucky
17.   Dan Orseske – 2* P we need a punter and he has a pretty big leg
18.   Ed Olson – 3* OT Gopher legacy that has some pretty good size; other offer from NIU
19.   Victor Keise – 3* WR had pretty good tape as a S but not so much as a WR
20.   Eric Jacques – 2* OG late addition to the class as he was a signing day surprise
I would have graded this class a B-.  There was some definite top end talent coming on but the wasn’t the same depth as the class of 2008   The class is pretty good through #13 but then it falls off.  It also addressed some of the needs we had like DE, stud RB, DB and OL to develop.
This class was lighter on the JUCOs (a good thing) and going to be able to take a redshirt year so we could start developing some depth.  There were some early defections (Kerry Lewis, Bryant Allen and Nick Rengel) and guys that never made it to campus (Hasan Lipscomb, Josh Campion and Joey Searcy)  Some of the guys didn’t pan out like Hayo Carpenter and Moses Alipate.
As far as my rankings go yes I botched the Hayo ranking and Wills will robably deserve to be higher whe all is said and done.  The remainder of the class will still have a couple years to prove themselves.
