Holy slack job Batman! I’ve let entirely too much time pass by without posting anything. I was doing some research and planning on comparing all of the major internet scouting services and seeing who does the better job of projecting who will be a good college football player. I was also kicking around an element of comparing the rankings to the offer lists of the all BX football players. But that takes time and I am realizing that it is a really long post. So I guess I’ll have to break it down some.
The last five years of all BX players (coaches poll, who cares about the press) presents some numbers that really shouldn’t surprise anyone like Ohio State has more players on this list than anyone else and NW, Indy and Minnesota have fewer than most. Also as your number of all BX players increases, so do the number of BX wins.
tOSU (8.2 players / year & 7.8 BX wins / year)
PSU (6.8 players / year & 5.2 wins / year)
Iowa (6.8 players / year & 4.2 wins / year)
Wisconsin (5.4 players / year & 5.4 wins / year)
Michigan (5.0 players / year & 3.8 wins / year)
Michigan State (3.2 players / year & 4.2 wins / year)
Illinois (3.0 players / year & 3.2 wins / year)
Purdue (2.4 players / year & 3.2 wins / year)
Indiana (1.8 players / year & 1.8 wins / year)
Minnesota (1.4 players / year & 2.2 wins / year)
Northwestern (1.0 players / year & 3.6 wins / year)
There are some factors to consider, such as coaching changes like Michigan hiring Rich Rodriguez and seeing their average wins take a nosedive for the last five years. Not surprisingly the Tim Brewster era wasn’t kind to the Gopher win total and also to the all BX team as the Gophers had five players on the first/second team in 2005 with four wins and four players in 2004 with three wins.
Northwestern seems to overachieve by winning games without elite talent and Wisconsin also puts up more wins in comparison to number of all BX players. On the flip side Iowa seems to do less with more as does Michigan. That sounds like an insult to Iowa and Michigan but the reality is Iowa still wins over half their games and Michigan had massive philosophical changes that didn’t go as smoothly as they would have hoped for.
Random thought - In compiling the data I realized that even with only 11 team in the league, it usually takes 7 wins to go to the Rose Bowl and the one year that Illinois went to the Rose Bowl with 6 wins is because tOSU was in the BCS Championship Game. It’s gonna be even harder to make the Rose Bowl now that we have the championship game and need to win 7-8 BX games in a year to book their flight to Pasadena.
